Dirk Rosen - Executive Director
Dirk has over 25 years of deepwater engineering experience. He was president and director of Deep Ocean Engineering before selling the company in 2000. At DOE, he was project manager and test pilot for all three Deep Rover 1,000 meter-rated manned submersibles, and a designer/operator of the Phantom and Bandit ROV systems. At Hawkes Ocean Technologies he served as project manager for the 11,000 meter rated Challenger, a manned submersible designed to go to the deepest point in the ocean, the Marianas Trench. He recently retired from the board of Save the Bay, where he served for nine years.
Natasha Benjamin - Policy & Conservation Manager
Natasha has over 10 years experience working on coastal and ocean resource management. Her background is in marine science and fisheries management and has strong expertise in science, policy and partnership building. Natasha has a Bachelors in Marine Biology and a Masters in Marine Policy. At MARE she works on development, outreach and using science to inform policy .
Rick Botman - Operations Engineer
Rick maintains and operates the ROVs and Video Lander while offshore, as well as managing the topside control and data collection systems. He also provides on-deck support during launch and recovery operations. While onshore he maintains the vehicle systems and develops new capabilities to enhance their value in survey and collection applications.
Steve Holz - ROV Deck Operations and Safety Officer
Steve has over 25 years experience with the deployment of marine equipment. He is a licensed boat captain that has safely lead the deployment and recovery of an ROV over 500 times in the past 10 years. Steve has a degree in fisheries biology.
Paolo Iuliano - Mechanical Engineer
Paolo has worked for MARE since 2013 maintaining the mechanical systems of MARE’s fleet. He performs repairs on crucial components, designs improvements and implements upgrades to expand the vehicle’s ability to collect scientific data. Paolo has a degree in Mechanical Engineering from San Francisco State University and enjoys cooking, gardening and wine making.
David Jeffrey - Sr. Engineer
David has over 25 years of deepwater ROV engineering design, build and troubleshooting experience, including co-design of the Deep Ocean Engineering Phantom ROV of ROVs and Deep Rover, Deep Flight and Challenger manned submersibles. David upgrades and maintains the offshore vehicle systems in a state of readiness.
Andy Lauermann - ROV Operations Supervisor
Andy has 12 years of experience planning and performing ROV field operations in California, Oregon and Washington state coastal waters, as well as 12 years of post-survey data processing, analysis and reporting. He is an expert pilot and navigator of MARE’s fleet of ROVs. He has a degree in marine biology.
Heidi Lovig – Environmental Scientist
Heidi has a strong interdisciplinary background in the aquatic sciences with over 8 years experience working in marine biology, fisheries management, and water quality. At MARE she works on grant writing, scientific reports, presentations and publications. Heidi has Bachelors degrees in Biology and Zoology and a Masters in Biology.
Kelsey Martin-Harbick – Marine Biologist
Kelsey has worked with MARE since the spring of 2015. She has 5 years’ experience working in freshwater and marine fisheries biology. At MARE she works on writing scientific reports and assisting with ROV operations on research cruises. Kelsey has a Bachelor’s degree in Biology from Central Washington University.
Phil Stevens - Director of Donor Partnerships
Phil joined the MARE staff in June, 2016 as director of donor partnerships. He has worked in nonprofit organizations for over 25 years; prior experience includes eight years as executive director of a small nonprofit devoted to restoring the Bay Area’s urban streams, and seven years with The Nature Conservancy’s California and Alaska chapters. Phil was a member of the MARE board of directors from 2004-2009.
Yuko Yokozawa - GIS/Data Management Specialist
Yuko has 10 years of experience with ROV field operations in California, Oregon and Washington coastal waters, as well as 10 years of post-survey data processing and analysis. She specializes in navigational post-processing and geo-referencing of all ROV data into a large Access database. She has a degree in oceanography
