FISHERIES

Marine fisheries are  a vital component of the world's food supply,  and occur in every ocean and sea around the globe. MARE works with  state and federal agencies, NGO's and  academic  partners   to provide the needed scientific information  on  species inhabiting  deep-ocean environments, helping to  inform the sustainable management of  these important resources.
WARTY SEA CUCUMBERS
Picture
Warty Sea Cucumbers,   Apostichopus parvimensis, are an important component of the subtidal zone, feeding on benthic waste and recycling nutrients. Similar to other sea cucumber fisheries around the world, demand for WSCs seems to be consistently increasing, while the resource is becoming less abundant. Working with California Department of Fish and Wildlife, with funding from the Resources Legacy Fund Foundation, MARE is gathering data on WSC distribution and abundance to help better manage this important species.

ROCKFISH CONSERVATION AREAS
Picture
Rockfishes (genus Sebastes) are among the most important commercial and recreational fisheries along the West Coast. Due to overfishing, the Pacific Fisheries Management  Council  enacted the Rockfish Conservation Areas in 2002, which prohibit the take of groundfish within depth restricted areas along the West Coast. Working in partnership with NGOs and academic institutions, MARE is providing critical data on how these closures are helping rebuild vital fish stocks.
