Dear Friends of MARE,
Our thoughts of health and hope go first to you, our MARE family; our gratitude continues to grow for those on the front lines, serving our communities in such critical ways during this COVID-19 crisis.
In the midst of a virus-filled news cycle, we found optimism in a recent review in the journal, Nature. The article offers hope that oceans can be significantly restored by 2050 if managed intelligently. We have been working within the Marine Protected Area model for 17+ years, and news like this serves to both validate our work and motivate us to redouble our efforts.
The COVID-19 crisis created several abrupt challenges for MARE, critically disrupting the plans we so painstakingly made for a full expedition schedule from April through October of this year. This schedule spanned the entire west coast and Hawaii. In spite of these challenges, our resolve is stronger than ever to realize our vision of Intelligent Ocean Management. With tremendous thanks to our generous foundation partners, as well as our dedicated Board of Directors, we expect to complete the expedition work we set out to do by the end of 2020, while retaining our entire staff.
These new plans will be substantially costlier and have posed significant logistical challenges, however with your support, we are confident we can adapt. During these unprecedented times, we appreciate all donations of time, treasure and talent to assist in the intelligent management of our oceans.
My gratitude goes to you, our MARE family, for enabling us to better understand our deep sea frontier and be at the front end of this hoped-for renaissance. I appreciate your continued support as we pursue our shared goals together, to explore, discover, and protect our ocean.
Best wishes,
