Tim Maricich F/V Donna Kathleen
MARE partners with with scientists, ocean managers and fishermen to collect deepwater data. We work closely with Tim Maricich, who has been fishing for over 40 years, and his crew (his wife and son) to locate study sites and ensure equipment is deployed and recovered successfully. This collaborative approach allows MARE to better understand the ocean by working with folks who have incredible knowledge and experience on the water.
Tim has a long family history of fishing and began purse seining in Alaska in 1968. In 1995, he acquired the 58-foot F/V Donna Kathleen, a Little Hoquiam boat. With the Donna Kathleen, he continued to seine in Alaska for a number of years before relocating his business to Moss Landing. In Moss Landing, Captain Maricich uses the Donna Kathleen to fish with traps for spot prawns.
After the implementation of California's Marine Life Protection Act, most of Tim's fishing grounds were closed. He now works with scientists and ocean managers to better understand the ocean resources and how to sustainably manage them for future generations.
MARE has worked with Tim and the F/V Donna Kathleen on numerous research cruises including:
