The Aloha Challenge

BATFish goes to Hawai'i

MARE is going to Hawai'i...and it's a big deal.

According to the UN’s recently released global assessment , our oceans are in trouble. Two-thirds of the world’s oceans have suffered significant decline in health:
  • Over 400 “dead zones”, or areas that can’t sustain marine life, have developed;
  • One-third of the world’s fisheries are unsustainably fished, putting critical ecosystems at risk;
  • Over 30% of marine mammals, and another 33% of the shark family and reef-forming corals, face the threat of extinction.

We humans, marine mammals, and seabirds all depend on a healthy ocean for food, oxygen, and its ability to mitigate climate change. When the ocean is in trouble, coastal communities are most acutely impacted. They rely on a healthy ocean for their livelihood.  Hawai'i is one such community. MARE is supporting the Sustainable Hawai'i Initiative, a statewide collaborative, by studying and documenting their nearshore waters. These waters have rich biodiversity, vital to its long term health. We need to protect it.

Success in Hawai'i offers hope around the world.

Intelligent ocean management is a proven strategy to promote resilience and sustainability in our deep sea ecosystems. The Sustainable Hawai'i Initiative includes a goal to effectively manage 30% of their nearshore waters by 2030. Their comprehensive plan addresses many concerns that other Island nations face, and their plan may serve as a road map for intervention and recovery. The UN is partnering with Hawai’i, finding alignment with their own aspirational Sustainable Development Goals.

Why MARE? Because when you can see a problem, you can solve a problem.

We know more about Mars than we do about our own blue planet. Climate change has made this gap in knowledge unacceptable. We need to look further, deeper, and more intently to help us develop effective, adaptive solutions. With only 3% of the ocean explored, we must make exploration a priority.

MARE partners for intelligent ocean management. We explore and collect data in the most biodiverse regions of our ocean, and use this information to help our partners determine resource management plans, illustrate successful conservation work, and understand how marine life is reacting and adapting to a warming, acidifying environment.

We   can    solve this.

The single biggest barrier to a thriving, biodiverse ocean is the social and political will to achieve that vision. The demonstrated commitment from all corners of Hawai’i’s island community offers us tremendous hope. We at MARE are excited and proud to be part of Hawai'i's work to save their nearshore waters.
